Getting reception-ready!

Helping Your Child Get Ready for Reception
Starting Reception is an exciting step, and every child approaches it in their own way. There’s no single “right” way to be ready for school – what matters most is that children feel safe, confident and connected.
At Wood Farm, our approach is guided by our values of Ambition, Beauty and Connection, and these values can also help shape how families prepare for school at home.
Building confidence and independence (Ambition)
Ambition in Reception isn’t about academic pressure – it’s about helping children believe “I can try”.
You can support this by:
- Encouraging your child to have a go at dressing themselves (especially coats and shoes
- Build up their independence with self-care, such as using the toilet independently and washing hands.
- Letting them practise small responsibilities, such as tidying toys or carrying their own bag
- Praising effort rather than perfection – confidence grows from trying
These everyday moments help children feel capable and ready to face new experiences.
Talking, listening and sharing (Connection)
Strong relationships are at the heart of a happy start to school.
Helpful things to practise at home include:
- Talking about feelings and naming emotions
- Taking turns in games or conversations
- Listening to stories together and talking about what you notice
You can also chat positively about school – meeting new friends, playing, listening to stories and exploring exciting things together.
Wonder, curiosity and care (Beauty)
Beauty at Wood Farm means noticing the world around us and finding joy in learning.
You might:
- Share stories and talk about the pictures!
- Draw, build, sing and explore together
- Notice nature – colours, shapes, sounds and seasonal changes
These experiences nurture curiosity, creativity and a love of learning.
What children don’t need before starting school
It’s very common for parents to worry that their child needs to:
- Read or write
- Know numbers or letters
- Sit still for long periods
Please be reassured – children do not need to be able to do these things before starting Reception. We will support their learning step by step.
Practical tips for a smooth start
- Help your child recognise their name on belongings
- Practise morning routines, such as getting dressed and arriving on time
- Talk through what a school day might look like in a calm, positive way
- Make sure to share any important information with us – we’re here to help
Supporting parents
Starting school is a big transition for families as well as children. Questions, nerves and mixed emotions are completely normal.
If you’re unsure about anything – routines, settling, or how your child is feeling – please talk to us. Supporting your child works best when we do it together.
